A brain tumor is an abnormal growth
of tissue in the brain or central spine canal that can disrupt proper brain function It is classified as Primary Brain tumor and Secondary Brain tumor
Primary brain tumor develops in the brain, can be benign (non cancerous) or malignant (cancerous). Secondary Brain tumor also called brain metastases is a cancerous tumor that develops in another part of the body, such as lung, colon and then spread to the brain. Whether it is benign or malignant, all such tumors are intrinsically serious and life-threatening,it requires immediate treatment because as they develops and grows, they press on normal brain structures in the confined space inside the skull.
Types of Brain Tumor
- Gliomas
- Meningioma
- Central nervous system (CNS) lymphoma
- Medulloblastoma
- Haemangioblastoma
- Acoustic neuroma
- Pineal region tumours
- Spinal tumours
- Pituitary tumours
Brain Tumor: Symptoms
- Seizures
- Headaches
- Personality or memory changes
- Difficulty speaking, changes in memory or emotional state
- Disturbed vision, hearing, smell or taste
- nausea and/or vomiting
- loss of initiative, sluggishness, and muscle weakness or paralysis.
Detailed Diagnostic Evaluation
- MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging)
- CT Scan (Computed Tomography)
- PET SCAN and Biopsy
- And Other brain scans
For Brain tumor treatments, our hospitals have a multidisciplinary team of Neurologists, Neuro-oncologists, surgical oncologists (Head & Neck unit), Medical oncologists, Radiation Oncologists, Onco-pathologists and Neuropsychologists and other Specialists.
Advanced Treatment Approaches
There are three main types of approaches for brain Tumor Treatment in India
- Surgery
- Chemoterapy
- Radiotherapy (radiation therapy)
Multi – Disciplinary treatment modalities used for Brain Tumor Treatment
- Latest advancement in image-guided surgery, providing real-time views of the tumor site with intraoperative magnetic resonance imaging (IMRI)
- Trans-Nasal Endoscopic – Advanced surgical treatment options for the management of brain tumors and lesion.
- Stereotactic Radio-surgery-Advanced imaging technologies to destroy the tumor and achieve permanent local control.
- Tumor Embolization- using Neuro Interventional Radiology.
- Endoscopic Minimally Invasive Neurosurgery
Advanced Surgical Treatment Approach
Surgical treatment is usually the first treatment used for a brain tumor done with the aim to remove the tumor and surrounding tissue during an operation. Sometimes, surgery cannot be performed if the tumors are called inoperable, the surgeon will recommend other treatment options.
Advanced Radiation therapy Approach
Radiation therapy also called radiotherapy is use of high-energy x-rays or other particles to destroy cancer cells, is classifies as two types of radiotherapy, External radiation (radiation comes from a large machine outside the body) and Internal radiation (uses implants inside the body).
External-beam radiation therapy can be directed at the tumor in the following ways-
- Conventional radiation therapy
- Three-dimensional conformal radiation therapy (3D-CRT)
- Intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT)
- Proton therapy
- Stereotactic radiosurgery
- Fractionated stereotactic radiation therapy
Chemotherapy Treatment Approach
Chemotherapy is an use of anti cancer drugs or chemicals (medication) for destruction of cancerous cells by stopping their ability to grow and divide. Other than the destruction, the chemotherapy’s goal remains to slow a tumor’s growth or reduce symptoms.
