Kidney transplant is a surgical procedure in which a diseased kidney is replaced with a healthy kidney which either may come from a live or deceased donor. This is mostly performed for patients with stage 5 chronic kidney disease or end stage renal disease (ESRD) where the kidney lost functioning that is filtering waste products from the blood.

Procedure :
The Procedure takes approximately 2 to 3 hours and is performed under general anesthesia and patient is positioned on the operating table, lying on your back
  • The transplant surgeon makes a cut in the lower abdomen on one side
  • The donor kidney (new kidney) is placed in the lower abdomen and blood vessels connected to arteries and veins. The blood flows through the new kidney, which makes urine. The ureter (tube that carries urine) is then attached to the bladder
  • The incision is closed with stitches or surgical staples and drain may be placed in the incision site to reduce swelling.

After Transplant: Recovery

After transplantation, few days of post observation care at the hospital, patient is discharged from the hospital and advised to stay at the nearby hotel for recovery and follow up.
Immunosuppressant drugs are given and are continued for the rest of the lives to keep ensure that the new transplanted kidney is accepted by the body. You are given guidelines regarding diet, medications, lifestyle changes and checkups.
