Most Advanced Robotic Heart Surgery at World Class Hospital in India

Robotic surgery for cardiac is a form of heart surgery performed through tiny incisions in the chest. The procedure is sometimes called da Vinci surgery because that is the name of the manufacturer of the robot often used for this procedure Robotic surgeries have been used for a number of different heart-related procedures, including mitral valve repair, coronary artery bypass, heart defect repair, and tumor removal.
Robotic Heart Surgery are now widely used to provide patients with less pain and faster recovery time. Limitations in surgical equipment have prohibited their use during heart bypass surgery -- until now. The advancement of computerized robotic technology is one of the most exciting breakthroughs in surgery to date, enabling surgeons to perform complete, bypass surgery less invasively. Penn Cardiac Care at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania is proud to be the only hospital in Philadelphia and one of only 12 in the nation invited to participate in a study to determine the effectiveness of this revolutionary procedure.

Robotic Heart Surgery in India is the latest and most advanced technique in the world to perform heart surgery with greatest precision Robot Assisted Heart Procedures are done to treat a variety of conditions:
·         Mitral valve repair—surgery to repair problems with the valve between the upper and lower chambers on the left side of the heart
·         Coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG)—surgery that creates a path around blocked heart vessels so that blood can reach the heart muscle. The bypass is done using blood vessels from other parts of the body to
Atrial septal defect repair—surgery to close a hole in the wall between the upper two chambers of the heart
·         Biventricular pacemaker lead placement for heart failure—surgery to place leads (wires) on the inner surface of the heart’s ventricles. The leads are attached to a biventricular pacemaker to help the heart beat in a regular rhythm.

Da Vinci Robotic system

The da Vinci robot is a highly sophisticated tool that enables the surgeon to perform the procedure with greater precision and control than is possible in traditional hands-on surgery. In robotically assisted surgeries, the chest cavity is accessed through dime-size "keyhole" incisions.

The surgeon sits in a console equipped with controls that direct robotic arms to perform the surgery. The da Vinci's robotic arms are essentially an extension of the surgeon's hands. A tiny camera attached to a robotic arm gives the surgeon a very detailed, three-dimensional view of the operating space inside the chest. The robotic arms are very agile, providing the surgeon a greater range of motion than is possible with hand-manipulated moves in standard procedures
Benefits of Robotic Heart Surgery
Minimally invasive surgery offers several advantages compared to open-chest procedures, including:
§  Faster return to normal activities. Rather than waiting several weeks to heal, patients can return to work or other activities much more quickly--usually within 10 days.
§  Shorter hospital stay. Time spent in the hospital can sometimes be reduced by as much at 50 percent, compared to open procedures.
§  No splitting of the breastbone ("cracking the chest"). Keeping the breastbone intact reduces the chance for post-surgical complications and infection.
§  Smaller incisions. Depending upon the case, the operation may be performed through four to five fingertip-size incisions or through a 3- to 5-inch incision at the side of the chest. Traditional open-heart procedures require a longer incision down the center of the chest.
§ Significantly less pain. Decreased damage to tissue and muscle results in less pain. Tylenol or aspirin are often enough to manage pain after some procedures.
§  Elimination of the heart-lung bypass machine, in most cases. Avoiding the bypass machine decreases the risks for neurological complications and stroke.
§  Minimal blood loss and less need for transfusion.
§  Little scarring. Instead of a long chest scar, only a few tiny scars or a short, 3- to 5-inch scar remains.

Pediatric Cardiothoracic Surgery in India

Hospitals in India have a success rate of between 98 to 99% for heart surgery in India Heart surgery in India is performed by cardiac surgeons of great experience, in terms of both number of surgeries, diversity of procedures and complexity of heart conditions This experience is built on top of the outstanding academic qualifications of heart surgeons in India.

Sometimes heart surgery in children is required for repairing defects in the heart which a child might have born with (known as congenital heart defects) and heart diseases which he gets after birth, which require surgery. Pediatric Cardiac Surgery deals with operative procedures in the newborn and unborn children and youngsters suffering from cardiac dysfunctions, structural, functional and rhythm-related issues of the heart also.

Pediatric Cardiac Surgery often deals with heart problems in children, the cause of congenital heart diseases which are common heart ailments among new born children and involves deficiencies like structural defects, congenital arrythmias and cardiomyopathies, which result in different kinds of abnormalities related to the heart. Congenital heart disease is a cause of improper growth of the heart or blood vessels before birth.

Pediatric Cardiology Facilities
The Paediatric cardiology department of any hospital offers all non-invasive diagnostic and paediatric cardiac interventional services. The diagnostic modalities are inclusive of foetal echocardiography, transthoracic and transesophageal echocardiography, round the clock Holter, CT and MR angiography as well as diagnostic cardiac catheterisation. Cardiologists, cardiovascular surgeons, anesthesiologists and other specialists work closely together to care for newborn as well as unborn children suffering from cardio-vascular disorders who provide exceptional pre and post operative services.

Pediatric heart surgery often deals with cases of congenital heart disease. Congenital heart disease is a common heart ailment among new born children and involves deficiencies like structural defects, congenital arrythmias and cardiomyopathies. This leads to different kinds of abnormalities related to theheart. Congenital heart disease is a cause of improper growth of the heart or blood vessels before birth. Pediatric heart surgery deals with operative procedures dealing with newborn and unborn children and youngsters suffering from cardiac dysfunctions.

Pediatric Cardiothoracic Surgery in India
There are a number of Pediatric Cardiology Surgeries such as balloon atrial septostomy, Valvuloplasty/Angioplasty, Patent Ductus Arteriosus, Ventricular Septal Defect and Atrial Septal Defect, Tetralogy of Fallot, Total Anomalous Pulmonary Venous Return, Double Outlet Right Ventricle etc. The major ones are:

Balloon Atrial Septostomy (BAS) : This technique, also known as the Rashkind procedure used for enlarging a hole between the right atrium and the left atrium. It is often used to manage patients with transposition of the great arteries. Here the larger hole improves oxygenation of the blood.
Valvuloplasty/Angioplasty : Valvuloplasty is that process where a small balloon is inserted and inflated for stretching and opening a narrowed (stenosed) heart valve. On the other hand, angioplasty is a non-surgical process which can be used for opening blocked heart arteries.
Patent Ductus Arteriosus : This is a kind of defect in infants where vessel (the ductus arteriosus) fails to close soon after birth which results in abnormal blood flow, between the pulmonary artery and aorta, which takes the blood from the heart to the lungs and to the rest of the body. To treat it, an incision is made under the chest through which tubes are inserted to regulate the flow of blood supply.

Atrial Septal Defect (ASD) and Ventricular Septal Defect (VSD) : Both of these are congenital defects. In ASD, the wall that separates the upper heart chambers (atria) does not close completely. The surgery here involves a placement of an ASD device into the heart through catheters, which is inserted by making a tiny incision in the groin area. While in VSD, happens at the time of birth. It is explained as one or more holes in the wall that separates the right and left ventricle of the heart. In pre-natal stages, the right and left ventricles of a heart are not separate. As the fetus grows, a wall is formed for separating the two ventricles but if the wall does not form completely, a hole remains. This can be treated by inserting cardiac catheterization.

Tetralogy of Fallot (ToF) : Another congenital heart defect, it is a constellation of four abnormalities, which result in insufficient oxygen in the blood. In this case, a surgery is needed for restoring these defects which are caused, main; paid at the time when the infant is young.

The cost of heart surgery in India is perhaps the lowest in the world Some comparisons show that patients in the USA can save 90 per cent of the treatment cost by having their heart surgery in India. The cost of heart treatment in India is also very much cheaper compared with Thailand, Singapore, etc which also attract medical tourists.

India’s hospitals have world-class cardiac catheterisation labs for diagnosis of heart diseases and performance of angiograms and angioplasties They also have state-of-the-art operation theatres that enable safe and successful heart surgery in India.”

Affordable Pacemakers Surgery in India - Best Heart hospitals in India

Pacemaker Implantation in IndiaHeart rhythm disorder is a serious medical condition and could lead to problems ranging from simple palpitations to sudden death. But the modern Electrophysiology has provided great solution to the patients suffering from heart rhythm problems. The newer techniques and developments in Electrophysiology have enhanced the quality of life in these patients to a great extent. Heart hospitals in India have now the best electrophysiology teams to offer the best treatment for patients with heart rhythm disorders.

Implantable pacemaker

What is it?In this surgical procedure, surgeons implant a device called a pacemaker, which regulates heart rate and rhythm.

Why is it performed? It is performed to treat abnormal heart rates or rhythms (arrhythmia), particularly if they have not responded well to drug therapy (medication).

What is done? The pacemaker consists of two parts. The leads are wires with electrodes at the tip that transmit electrical signals to the heart muscle from the pulse generator. These electrical signals cause the heart muscle to contract (pump). The pulse generator (often referred to as the pacemaker) is a small unit with a computer that generates the electrical signal. Most pacemaker implantations are performed under local anesthesia (similar to the anesthesia used by dentists).

What can you expect?Usually, the procedure is scheduled ahead of time. A week or so before your operation, you will probably be asked to visit your hospital. Various tests, such as blood and urine tests, an electrocardiogram, and other tests may be performed. Your doctor will explain the risks and benefits of the procedure and you will be asked to sign a consent form. Before the procedure starts, inform your doctor if you:
  • Have ever had a reaction to any contrast dye, iodine, or any serious allergic reaction (for example, from a bee sting or from eating shellfish).
  • Have asthma.
  • Are allergic to any medication.
  • Have any bleeding problems or are taking blood-thinning medication.
  • Have a history of kidney problems or diabetes.
  • Have body piercings on your chest or abdomen.
  • Have had any recent change in your health.
  • Are, or may be, pregnant.
What happens during the procedure?

Endocardial lead positioningThis is the most common procedure for implanting a pacemaker. You will be awake throughout the procedure. You will be given a sedative to help you relax and local anesthetics in areas that are involved in the procedure (usually the upper chest area). A thin, flexible tube (catheter) will be inserted into a blood vessel and, using a fluoroscope (similar to an X-ray picture to visualize the catheter), threaded into the heart. Once in the heart, the leads will be attached to the inside lining. The leads will be tested to ensure they are working correctly. From time to time, you may be asked to take deep breaths or cough vigorously in order to test the placement of the leads.Once the leads are in the best locations, they will be plugged into the pulse generator. The pulse generator will be slipped into a small pocket made just beneath the skin of your upper chest or your abdomen. You may feel slight pressure while the leads and pulse generator are being inserted into the pocket.

Epicardial lead positioningBecause a larger incision is made in the chest, this procedure is usually performed under a general anesthesia and you will be asleep. The exterior surface of the heart is exposed and the leads attached directly to the surface (epicardium) of the heart. The pulse generator is usually placed under the skin in the upper abdomen, but may also be placed in the upper chest area.

After the procedureOnce surgery is completed, you will be taken to a recovery room. There may be some soreness around the site where the pulse generator was implanted, but it can be managed with pain medication. Depending upon your condition and which procedure you had, you may stay in the hospital anywhere from several hours to a few days.

When you return home, keep an eye on your incisions. Some bruising is normal but contact your doctor if you experience increased pain, redness, swelling, bleeding or other draining from an incision, fever, or chills. Most people are aware of their pacemaker for a short time following its implantation, but this sensation usually decreases with time.

Following implantation of a pacemaker, it is OK to take a shower, bathe or engage in usual sexual activity. During the initial eight weeks, avoid sudden, jerky movements with your arms, stretching or reaching over your head or touching the pacemaker. After this time, just avoid putting pressure on the chest area over the implant.

Monitoring your pulseIt is important to always carry your pacemaker ID card. You should also be aware of your pacemaker’s maximum and minimum programmed heart rates. Monitor your pulse regularly and report the readings to your healthcare provider at your pacemaker checkup. With the help of a special analyzer your doctor can detect if the batteries are about to run down.

MyMedOpinion Affiliated Best Heart Hospitals in India offer Most Advanced Heart Valve Repair or Replacement Surgery

Heart Valve Repair
Heart valve repair is a surgical or minimally invasive procedure that corrects a heart valve that is not functioning properly. Heart valve repair usually involves the heart valve leaflets that open and close to pump blood through the heart.
Your cardiac surgeon shall investigate and advise if repairing your heart valve is the best way to treat your heart valve disease.

Heart Valve Replacement
When valve repair shall not be of help, replacing your damaged heart valve may be the most effective treatment for your condition. Also known as Heart Valve Replacement, Aortic Valve Replacement, is a cardiac surgery procedure in which the damaged heart valve is replaced with a new valve. This valve can be a tissue valve taken from some other body, or may be of animal or an artificial or prosthetic valve.

Heart valve repair or replacement can be done for one single valve or more than one depending upon the condition of your valves.

The procedure used to repair your heart valve depends on which valve is damaged. Tricuspid and mitral valves are the most likely to be repaired. A large percentage of patients with mitral valve damage have successful repair procedures.

A valve that does not open fully will limit forward blood flow. This is called Stenosis.
Tests show that the changes in your heart valve are beginning to seriously affect your heart function.
Your heart valve has been damaged by infection of the heart valve (Endocarditis).
You have received a new heart valve in the past, and it is not working well, or you have other problems such as blood clots, infection, or bleeding.
Remove calcium deposits that may have built up around the valve leaflets
Repair the cords that control the movement of the valve leaflets
Reattach the valve to its cords
Add support to the base of the valve (annulus) by adding tissue or by sewing an annulus band or ring around the outside of the valve
Maintain an adequate supply of oxygen-rich blood flowing through your heart
Reduce the possibility of damaging your heart and blood vessels
Give you the best possible option for returning a healthy and active life

    Why is it required?
You may need surgery if your valve does not work properly.
A valve that does not close all the way will allow blood to leak backwards. This is called Regurgitation.
You may need heart valve surgery for these reasons:
Defects in your heart valve are causing major heart symptoms, such as chest pain (angina), shortness of breath, fainting spells (syncope), or heart failure.
What is done during CABG/Redo CABG?
During the operation, the surgeon opens your chest to get to your heart and the problem valve. You will be anesthetized for the surgery and will feel no pain. During the procedure, you'll be put on a heart/lung machine that takes over your breathing and blood circulation. One or more of the following procedures are carried out to repair your heart valve:
Resize the valve by removing extra tissue

Indian Hospitals Provide a Ray of Hope to Heart Patients

Non Surgical Heart Valve Replacement at MyMedOpinionaffiliated hospitals in India

Medical professionals have recently given a new hope of life to all those heart patients in India, who couldn’t undergo open chest surgery due to aging factors or any other complication. India’s first non-operative procedure to replace the damaged aortic heart valve gives a ray of hope to elderly people unfit to undergo surgery.

Doctors at MyMedOpinion affiliated Heart Institute recently performed the path-breaking procedure— per cutaneous trans catheter aortic valve  implantation (TAVI) — on three people above 70 years of age, with damaged aortic heart valve, who were declared inoperable because of their age and underlying medical conditions such as lung or kidney problem, previous heart surgery etc.

“The conventional valve replacement surgery is a major surgery where the heart is exposed by cutting open the chest, but in this procedure, the artificial valve is mounted on a catheter and inserted thorough the femoral artery with a puncture in the groin. It’s more like an angioplasty that is performed in the cath lab under general anesthesia.

The procedure takes about two hours and the person can go home by the fourth day.

Open heart surgery to replace the heart valve remains the first preference of doctors, but for those who cannot be operated on, this technique is a boon. More than 30 percent people with AS can’t undergo open chest surgery due to old age and other complications. For such patients, TAVI will prove to be a fresh lease of life, without which they wouldn’t have life expectancy of more than one year.

At present, the valve is known to last up to 15 years, and the  surgery costs much less than at similar hospitals in USA. After the age of 75 years, 5% population is at the risk of developing a problem in their heart valve, out of which 35% are not suitable for surgery. If not treated, 50% of them will not survive for more than two years.

“I’m happy that I got it done here, otherwise would have had to go to the United States and get it done at an exorbitant price,” said  an 80 year old  patient  who the doctors say would not have survived for more than a year, if the procedure had not been performed.
